Lourdes had been attending the ladies Bible study for the past two years. She had hardened her heart due to her previous experiences and struggles. Her expressions were filled with hurt and sorrow, but refused to allow the Lord into her life. Every year she would walk out during the time of the invitation. On Wednesday after the ladies bible study Lourdes asked to speak to me because she had some questions. After our conversation she said she would return on Thursday morning. The following day as Pastor Enoc was preaching Lourdes came over and I began ministering to her, and she broke into tears saying she was “ready to accept the Lord as her personal Lord and Savior.” Her youngest daughter ran to her and gave her a big hug not knowing what was going on, as the daughter turned to look at me, her mom said to her “Honey, these are tears of joy” Lourdes looked at me and said “I feel like I have been set free and peace in my heart”. Her expression had a beautiful smile and to see how God had transformed her right before my eyes is just one of many miracles that the Lord performed in Costa Rica. We serve a God of Miracles.

Mexico 2010- Thoughts on Mexico Missions

Greetings from Mexico! My name is Stephen. This is my second time in Irapuato, and my seventh mission trip to Mexico overall. At this point, traveling to another country to share God's love is not "foreign" to me at all. For others that have not been able to have such an experience, however, it can seem otherworldly. With the help of this blog, and the pictures posted by my brother, hopefully you will be inspired by the reality of missions, and one day answer the call and go for yourself. Without further ado, I will attempt to place you in my shoes so that you can better understand some of the things that go on here. I could write an entire novel, but I'll try to limit myself to a few paragraphs.

This morning, I led a class at la Iglesia Bautista Getsemani with Macy and Sarai (a woman from the local church). It has been such a blessing working with them this week! Oh, and the children. My class is full of about thirty 6 to 8-year-old kids, and they are all so special! One day our lesson was on the story of Zaccheus, and they were quite pleased to hear that there is a song in English that tells the story... though I don't think they understood the words too well :)

The children are also so thankful for everything-- from the newly-installed ceiling fans (for which I was very thankful for, too!) to the pieces of foam that go together to make the daily craft.

Spending this week with our brothers isn't just about what we bring, though-- it is more about what we share. The brotherhood that we have together is so uniquely full of love, I don't want to leave.

I do know one thing that is for sure-- that when we do leave here tomorrow, all of the people that have been led to the faith will be in good hands. Our partners here have such a passion for the Lord.

...so. You might've noticed that I'm going all over the place with this entry. I lack the eloquence to accurately describe to you what being on a trip like this in Mexico is like. Or maybe the concentration. Look closely at the photos attached, a picture is worth a thousand words. I guess all that's left is for you to come and experience it for yourself.

True Godly Love

I told a girl I liked her bracelet and in a second, it was on my wrist.

I told a girl I liked her bow, and in a moment it was mine.

Despite coming from poor families and less-than-grandoise lives, these kids gave me something more valuable than any gift of great monetary value. They showed me the selfless heart of Christ.

They reminded me what it is to cherish people more than things or status or comfort. And that-- a love of people above all else-- is what God is all about.

I came to share God's love yet was taught, in a way only a child could, what that love looks like. Praise God for His ironic sense of humor!

Mexico 2010- Women of Eben-Ezer

It has been a real blessing to teach the women at Eben-Ezer. They have a deep desire to learn God's Word. One lady, Rosaria, came on Tuesday and asked us to pray for her husband Francisco.

She is afraid to study her Bible in her home in front of him, so we prayed for him. Rosaria was not able to come today, but her husband brought her children to VBS! Praise the Lord!

My prayer is that these women (12 came today) would continue to meet and pray for one another and study God's word together.

Mexico 2010- Lessons at Che Guevara

Hola amigos! This morning my VBS group headed to Che Guevara, about 15 minutes outside of downtown Irapuato. It is a community hit hard by economic depression, crime, and poverty.

Wednesday morning marked our third morning at Che Guevara and each day has brought us more and more people hungry for God.

A rough dirt floor, a part tin/ part tarp roof and a couple dozen white plastic chairs is the small church of Alpha and Omega at Che Guevara, where we held VBS. And for the people of this community it is an answer to prayers. The economic situation of Che Guevara may be depressed, but the people are not. Smiles, laughter, hugs, and songs of small children all the way up to mothers and grandmothers have filled that building every morning.

I have been so blessed at Che Guevara. Despite my best efforts to be the blessing, it seems that the roles have been reversed. God has used the children and the leaders to teach me to love life and especially my God through thick and thin; finding my joy in Him every step of the way. I know I will never forget it.

Today we did a bead craft… a very difficult bead craft designed for small kids. They were keychains but most everyone wore them as bracelets.

I sat, trying to help ten or so kids asking questions-- all at the same time. Most of the time, I did not know the answer but I said "sí" as if I knew what they were talking about. They seemed satisfied.

It was a blessing to see these kids just light up when they completed the task of spelling out "Confiar en Dios" (meaning "Trust in God) on their bracelets.

I knew that what seemed like a simple basic bracelet to me meant the world to them and that they would most likely be holding on to those bracelets when I came to visit in the years to come.

I am so thankful to be in Irapuato. Was it worth all the extra things that had to be done before leaving? Was it worth staying at the office 'til 1:30 AM the night before leaving? Was it worth a few hours' sleep?

When six ladies accepted Christ today, then YES, it was worth it! When you see a sad face turn into a happy face, YES, it is worth it. When you give a hug to the new Christians and you can feel the love in their long hug, YES it is worth it! Today, a 78-year-old petite woman, who could not write her own name, now has her name written in the book of life!

Thank you God for allowing us to be here to share the good news, and thank you Crossroads for the invitation.

Back After 8 Years

I have many wonderful memories of previous Mexico mission trips and was thrilled to have the opportunity to return! As I began to prepare for this trip, I realized it had been eight years since I had been to Mexico and oh, how I was reminded again of those cherished times.

A lot has changed over the past eight years and I could hardly wait to see what the Lord was going to do in the city of Irapuato. Today was the first day to go to our VBS sites. As our bus pulled into the site, we were greeted with the sweet little smiles of children ready to begin the week. The morning was full of sining, Bible stories, crafts, and games. But more importantly, it was full of laughter, smiles, hugs, and the love of Christ. It is amazing how God's love is bigger than any language barrier.

As we were about to leave, my dad introduced me to José, a friend he led to the Lord last year. When José saw dad, his first comment was, "I knew you would be back." I was reminded at that moment the investments made in the lives of the people of Irapuato will never be forgotten. So today, new memories were made.

Saturday and Sunday in Costa Rica

Greetings to all! We have been so busy getting ready to leave for La Cumbre, the site where we will be conducting a youth camp for around 87 students ages 9-17 starting Monday morning.

Saturday -

We were able to go help Glen, a man involved with Pastor Paul's church in San Jose, break ground on an auditorium for a new Christian camp site near Jaco. We dug trenches and holes for about 6 hours so that they could pour in the cement for the foundation of the worship amphitheater stage. We couldn't really move after that work, so we then traveled down to the beach and spent a couple hours taking in the beauty of God's creation and body surfing on the huge waves! It was a great time of working together and team bonding between the 9 of us that will be serving together for the next week!

Sunday -

This morning we attended church at Pastor Paul's church, International Baptist Church. Philip DePrang was able to address the congregation in both of their services to tell them about why we are here and what a blessing it is to partner with such great people at IBC. We (the camp team: Casey Clark, Philip DePrang, Pastor Morris, Ryan Jackson, Michael and Samantha Jasch, Gabby Ortiz, and Brad and Logan Rector) then went to the Youth Sunday School class and met some of the kids who will be going to camp with us this week. It was strange to see the first service more full than the second service, but then we remembered that there was some sort of important "futbol" game going on, and we were able to watch it over lunch at a local restaurant in San Jose.

Today was the calm before the storm of camp begins in about 8 hours. We covet your prayers for strength, endurance, and protection as we try our best to teach the kids about faith, and what faith is, and how we must act in faith as followers of Christ. We miss you all and will update you about how camp was when we return on Thursday night! Pura Vida!

Mexico 2010- Joint Worship

The missionaries met outside of the auditorium to pray before going inside for a massive joint church service.

It was even big/important enough to attract the attention of a local newspaper! Here, a journalist interviews various pastors (including Larry).

There was a lot of meeting and greeting.

The auditorium became more and more packed as the service went on-- towards the end, we ran out of chairs and had to go to "standing room only"!

At the end, there was a call for prayer as the pastors stood up front and received anyone who came forward.

It was a long, Mexican church service (3 and a half hours!) but it was good, and God was glorified.

We were all very surprised with the new construction at Iglesia Bautista de Buenos Aires. Our "Church without walls" is building walls. New church members, thanks to Pastor Enoch's construction job, are working to finish the walls in the sanctuary. All the material's are being donated by the church members.

It is a blessing to see the growth of our mission church. They have gone from 5 members to 50 in two years. Today we are training six members for this week's VBS. They will be doing Registration, Crafts, Snacks, and Teaching Classes.

Our Ladies Bible Study success has inspired Bob Garza to teach our First Men's Bible Study. Seven men attended this study. "Setting The Vision" Nehemiah 1:9, 2:13&14, 2:17&18.

Mexico 2009- Goodbye and Adios

Today, our last day at San Antonio, I looked around at all the faces that I have come to love. I have been working with the women's ministry at this site. We didn't know that we would have a women's ministry here when we came on Monday. But on that first day of VBS, three ladies showed up who had a desire to study God's word.

Each day our group grew. Today we had 27 ladies who wanted to hear more about Jesus and study God's word. Bible study here is not in a comfy room with cushioned chairs, a nursery for the little ones, and fresh hot coffee. In fact there is no room, no chairs, no nursery, and no coffee. We sit on a tarp outside. We did manage a shady spot though. The mothers who have babies and toddlers too young for the VBS have them sitting with us. But this has been one of the greatest times of sharing with other women that I have had.

Sitting behind us, Pastor Larry sits with his new friend, Jose. Carol wrote about him on Monday. Larry has his Bible open and is sharing God's word with Jose. Across the way, I see my girls, Katie and Hannah, loving on the children and hugging their new friends from La Roca, the church that we're working with here. I start to get a little sad that I'm coming home today. I'm going to miss this. I'm going to miss seeing these ladies.

But as I shared with my hermanas (sisters) here, we will one day all live together. As Paul wrote in Philippians 3:20, "Our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ." There will come a day, when it won't matter if we came from the Estados Unidos, Mexico, or anywhere else. If we belong to Jesus Christ, we will all live with Him in heaven, and language will no longer be a barrier. So yes, it's sad to go, but in Christ there really is no such thing as "Adios!"

Mexico 2009- Streets of Ucopi

This week in Irapuato I have had the opportunity to see many smiling faces and the work of God at each site, while working on the media team with Philip Jones. This afternoon, I witnessed the joy of new believers and the powerful work of the Holy Spirit with the street team at Ucopi.

I followed Art (our translator), Bridget Abdo, and Jennifer Martin as they went from house to house to share Christ with the people of Ucopi. We stopped by to say hello to Cira, an older lady who had received Christ the day before, and she was filled with such joy to see the team once again. We asked her if she had any neighbors who we could pray for. She led us to her next-door neighbor’s house where we stayed for the next hour. Once invited inside, Art began to talk to Virginia (Cira’s neighbor) about God.

He explained to her the free gift that is a relationship with Christ. Jennifer also shared things with her about believing and the power of prayer. She literally dropped to her knees as she told Virginia to pray for her community. Virginia prayed to receive Christ today. Afterwards, Art explained to her how to pray and the group encouraged her to pray and study her Bible with her neighbor Cira.

Once we left, we went to tell Cira that her neighbor, Virginia, was also a believer and they should pray together. Art showed Cira how to pray as well and we left, encouraging them to gather as believers and pray for a revolution in their community.

Mexico 2009- Unity Through Construction

As the Crossroads construction team opened the doors of La Roca, we started examining the work that needed to be done. The two biggest projects were building the inside of a kitchen and all the electrical work in the church. As we started making many frustrating trips to Home Depot and local hardware stores, we soon discovered our original plans were as good as trash. Thus began our makeshift blueprints.

We proceeded to strip out every wire in this two-story church so we could install better wires, fans, lights, switches, etc. As well, the project of building the inside of an uneven kitchen proceeded. As our blood, sweat, tears and frustration were put in this house of God, our hearts and attitudes began to change.

We soon were joined by 10+ male members of La Roca to help us in our endeavors to construct their place of worship. It grew to be a special opportunity for the men of Crossroads and La Roca to gather and work as one under God. We had the opportunity to ecourage the La Roca men to have a love for their church and help it succeed in reaching the community of Irapuato.

Tremendous fellowship was shared and hearts were impacted as two different cultures clashed to work as one for the glory of God. As seeds are planted in people's hearts, nails, cabinets, wire, lights, and fans were planted so the mission of God could be done. Our great God has used and will use His great church, La Roca, to impact and change the great city of Irapuato.

The theme "God of this City" describes Irapuato so well. Everyone I met acted like Jesus with skin on. One thing that I was amazed by were the children.

They're excited by the simplest things. And when I watched them, I thought about all the wonderful blessings that I have taken for granted. I loved working with them and the church members.

I will never forget my mission trip to Irapuato; it was a wonderful blessing.

Mexico 2009- The Little Children

"The Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groans too deep for words."

Words cannot adequately describe the experiences of this place. It seems easy to get lost in the overwhelming poverty and human suffering. How sweet it must be to our Lord to hear the prayers of the saints filtered through the Holy Spirit for His precious ones, whom He loves at this place. How comforting to review that He holds these dear ones in His hands and He is in control and all is going according to His plan.

"Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them. To such as these belongs the Kingdom of God."

It was a wet and rainy morning, and I wondered what God had planned. Upon arrival the sweet ladies of La Roca church swept the mud from the concrete assembly area of the school. Slowly the children arrived with bright smiles and full of anticipation. How beautiful and pleasing to our Lord that these little ones would soon hear God's Word. Close by, mothers sat on dark blue tarp-- they heard a testimony of redemption and the Romans Road. Glory to God.

Mexico 2009- Miracles on the Streets of Ucopi

Let me just start out by saying that Bridget doesn't speak Spanish. She doesn't understand it, either -- typically. And while I'm giving a bit of background story, I'll tell you that door-to-door witnessing in Ucopi is not exactly... recommended. These city slums are a dangerous place. I was forewarned. But in an effort to be most effective and use my time according to my gifts, I spent some time on Monday afternoon walking the streets of these city slums, begging God for spiritual discernment. I spent considerable time on Monday night and Tuesday in prayer for Ucopi, and the work that would be done there.

It is now Wednesday, and I could tell you any of a multitude of stories of the work of the Spirit in Ucopi over the last 48 hours. But it is late, and Philip is waiting, so I'll just tell you my favorite one.

Bridget and I visited the home of Alicia, accompanied by a few of our new Spanish-speaking friends. Poor, broken, worried, and hurting, Alicia humbly accepted our prayers and graciously welcomed the news we brought. We told her of a love that was greater than all hurt and stronger than any need. We talked about Christianity, a relationship with Christ, and sins that were covered by grace. Alicia cried. I prayed.

Alicia's home, in the heart of the city slums, is beautiful. She loves flowers and so one entire side of her little cardboard box is lined with potted plants -- most of them in bloom. The live botanicals are a welcome reprieve -- a literal breath of fresh air -- from the other sites and smells of Ucopi. Five of us sat on plastic lawn chairs near these flowers, talking of Christ and hope and love and salvation and children and family. Picture this moment with me. In the middle of a very dark place, where drugs and theft and rape and danger lurk, there are five people, sitting near the flowers, speaking Truth and the word of God, praying, begging, laughing, crying.

Art, one of the five in this conversation, is from Harlengten. He speaks fluent Spanish and he is passionate about sharing Jesus Christ with those who don't believe. He and Alicia talked for quite some time, and Alicia prayed with Art to ask that Jesus Christ cover her sins with His grace. The two continued to talk for some time in Spanish. Bridget and I did not understand the language, so we sat in our lawn chairs and prayed silently. At some point in this crazy conversation, Bridget turned to me and, with perfect clarity, interpreted the Spanish conversation between Alicia and Art.

He tells her that just as these flowers need water and sunlight to grow and bloom, so she will need a church in order to grow in her life with Christ....

My mouth dropped open. How do you know, I whispered to her. I don't know. I just know. Bridget continued to translate for several minutes, overwhelmed by the Spirit and a gift that neither one of us have ever imagined, much less expected.

I don't understand the intricate workings of the Holy Spirit. I don't know how God does what He does, or why He chooses to use the people He uses. This mystery is beautiful to me. And I am thankful, so thankful that I have been allowed to glimpse a bit of God's power as He works through us in Mexico. It has been an awesome week, filled with the power of God, the glory of Christ, prayer, healing, worship, and many other stories just like this one.

Today at our morning VBS site, "La Roca," we sang, played with the kids, taught them a lesson, and had a craft. I loved watching the kids laugh and play with us and each other and watching how a tattoo or a balloon can bring such a big smile to their faces. I'm always amazed how much I can connect with the kids without knowing what they say. Today and the rest of this week has really shown me how God works, not us.

We were once again privileged to visit the Atenas Orphanage where Pastor Carlos is a board member. It has always been a highlight of our trip getting to take snacks and love on the precious children.

Unfortunately this year most of the children were in quarantine for chicken pox.
Please pray for Olga and the other adult workers. They all are exhausted from taking care of the sick children around the clock.

We did get to see and talk to one special child that has been allowed to stay there even though he is over the age limit. When we first met him, he had large braces on his legs and had great difficulty trying to walk with crutches. He also did not talk at all. Today he has no braces on his legs, walks very well with the aid of a walker, and talks a lot. What a joy to see him smiling and asking us how to say many things in English. Praise God he is doing so well.

Either my eyes are already bad at the ripe age of 18, or the kids here are multiplying! It's a huge blessing that the churches of Irapuato are so efficient and so devoted to our Lord-- otherwise me & my broken "espanol" would be totally out of luck.

My primary roles at "Getsemani" are strumming, gluing, and simply loving on kids who most likely see me as a goofy foreigner who is dumb enough to think they are laughing with me! Only kidding! I happen to know my "gato" jokes are funny.

On a more serious note, I have witnessed some pretty miraculous things. The amount of love that has been circulating at the sites is inspiring. Despite the apparent language barrier, the local churches & Crossroads are beautifully united with purpose and love that would bring any grown man (or woman) to his (or her) knees in praise of our awesome God.

Another thing I have learned from my morning site is the importance of God and one's home country. Before VBS, (or "EBV," if you will) the kids and congregation sing songs and say pledges to both God and Mexico-- however, they do this with every bit of sincerity! I am blessed to live in a country that allows me to worship my savior in any way I choose. I don't have to do so in secret or in fear of being punished. I can quite literally shout it from a mountain top (thanks to the 1st Amendment). It makes me wonder why I don't take more advantage of my rights. Tonight, I plan on thanking God for the USA.

For Mexico.

For His Son.

For His love-- that I recieve even in my most ugly of moments.

For Crossroads and this mission team that I am so proud to be a part of.

And finally for all the support back home. It makes all the difference. I'm excited for what tomorrow holds-- and hopefully that's an easier craft.

One of our favorite VBS students is Marlon. Marlon has entertained us for many years with his charm and adorable distractions. Today this young boy age 15 told us his father has left his family. He said "I am sad, I am the man of my house now." My heart broke for this precious boy. What will happen to that inocent sparkle in his eyes and beautiful smile on his face that we all fell in love with?

At the end of VBS, Marlon asked his Mother to come in to meet with Esther. Esther told her that the best she could do for her was to offer her hope through accepting Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. She showed her the plan of salvation, and she accepted the Lord! We rejoice with a new sister in Christ!

Please pray for God to provide the physical and spiritual needs of this family through this difficult time!

God's Grace at Carrizalito

God is great, and every moment of VBS at Carrizalito proved that we serve a great God. Everything that we needed was provided and we had a wonderful time. Even things that would seem bad, like a bus that was an hour late, turned into a good situation because we got to get to know each other better and invite more children to VBS.

The kids were terrific and very open to the word of God. They were so thankful when, in reality, they were the ones helping us. We went to the site with the mindset of serving & teaching others, but the children and helpers are the ones who blessed us.

We had the opportunity to sing songs, paint faces, make balloon animals, play with, make crafts with, feed, and love on the kids. It was such a great experience that was life-changing.

Mexico 2009- Star Spangled Morning

It would be difficult to tell you the story of today at San Antonio El Rico without first telling you of our prayer time together last night. Pastor Larry was really struggling with a decision of whether to go to a VBS site or to stay and teach the local Pastors and their wives. He had good reasons for doing either, so choosing one or the other proved to be a difficult task. So our group prayed over him, seeking God’s wisdom for the decision.

As it would turn out, Pastor Larry (PL as I affectionately call him) decided that he should go to the VBS site with us. We arrived at our location, which was really nothing more than a dusty field, complete with stray dogs, and even a few cows and goats! We strung tarps from trees to provide some shade from the glaring sun and VBS began!

Not long into the morning, a grown man arrived at our location, dressed in very tattered clothes, smelling like he had not bathed in quite some time, and bringing with him a very, very strange request. He asked me if I would write down the Star Spangled Banner for him . . . the Star Spangled Banner. So, I obliged.

It was pretty funny because I had to sing it as I wrote it down and at one point I simply could not remember the words. And up walked PL. “PL, “ I said. “What comes after o’er the ramparts we watch?” And in the best soprano voice I have ever heard from a man, he sang the rest of the words to me as I wrote them down.

Once I had given the song to the man I thought, “I should witness to this man.” So I asked, “Sabes Cristo?” (“Do you know Christ?”) and he said no. Panicking, because my Spanish is TERRIBLE, I grabbed Sophie Chavez, who is quite fluent in Spanish, and Pastor Larry, who is quite fluent in Jesus, and I told them both that the man did not know Jesus, and I thought they should tell him about Jesus.

What happened after that was so incredible. Picture the scene of this man (Jose Luis), Pastor Larry, and a teenage girl, standing in the midst of a dirty, dusty field and eternal life change happening. As fast as PL could talk, and as fast as Sophie could translate, they talked of God’s love and the saving grace of Christ to Jose Luis. And Jose Luis became our brother, our “hermano”, in Christ.

Mexico 2009- Conglomerated Church Service

What a day! What a tremendous worship service we had with our brothers and sisters in Christ here in Irapuato. The service was held in the central theater in the center of Irapuato. But what was so great was the coming together of all of the baptist churches from around the city. The place was literally packed. I believe there were around 10 churches represented.

The service started with the praise team from Iglesia Bautista "La Roca." It was awesome. A brief video was shown about the history of the mission work of Crossroads in San Luis Potosi, and the beginning of the new and future work here in Irapuato. Praise teams from Crossroads lifted beautiful praises to our Lord. "Great job, guys!"

I had the privilege of presenting a chalk drawing with a challenge to the churches about the urgency of reaching the lost in Irapuato for Christ. Brother Larry shared what it was for the pastors to be great, the church members to be great, and for the churches to be great-- by being servants to a lost and hurting world. Then brother Jose capped it all off by cutting the ribbon to start off the new commitment to join the churches here in Irapuato to reach this city for Christ.

This is the fifth year for CRBC VBS in Palmares. The greatest need we observed every year of Iglesia Bautista de Buenos Aires, besides physical walls, was Pastor support. Our constant prayers were for Pastor Carlos to stay strong and for someone to help him in his ministry.

Answered prayers from God came out of Palmares. Pastor Enoch was serving a congregation that was meeting in a very small home. They had out grown the home and were under constant complaints from the neighbors. Pastor Enoch approached Pastor Carlos with the idea of a partnership between the two churchs. Their heart for the Lord and willingness to compromise have created a flurishing church with a bright future in Palmares.

Day Full of Conferences

Today the rest of the missionaries arrive, filling out our numbers. The conferences continued for most of the day, with three separate sessions all based on family relationships.

The Tuckers order food at Sanborn's, the local restaurant everyone is visiting.

The conference carried on as Crossroads utilized translators to get the message across.

Pastor Larry continued to speak on such topics as family relations and marriage.

Because the parents were in conferences all day, we kept the kids entertained with music...

...and games.

Tomorrow, all of the area churches are coming together for a grand service. It should be good!

Costa Rica 2009 - Getting Ready for Mission Trip

Three days until 22 eager missionaries fly to San Jose, Costa Rica for CRBC Costa Rica Mission Trip 2009.

Everyone is busy packing and weighing their bags. One bag each with 50 pounds limit. Packing all our supplies into trunks: T-shirts,bibles,teaching tools, and crafts are packed.

This will be my third year to help Pastor Carlos and CRBC missionaries with VBS in Palmares. When I reflect on last year's trip, I am reminded of Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. Letting go of the controls are never easy, but this is the only way to receive the peace and joy beyond understanding...And Witness God's Awesome Glory!

Pineapple Juice????

Hey Crossroads!

Today started for me at about 6:00 AM, waaaaayyyyy to early for summertime! We had waffles for breakfast and what I thought we were drinking was orange juice, but surprise surprise, it was pineapple juice!

I’m in a group called Shingle Bells, and by the way our group is amazing! We have some pretty hard workers and we have been getting things done pretty fast. This morning our group was on our way to our resident’s house and one of our girls realized she was wearing flip flops (which is against the dress code), so we had to turn all the way around to get her tennis shoes. It was a bonding moment in the car.

Yesterday our group thought we could do a little more than we could actually handle. We were supposed to leave our site at 3:30-4pm and we didn’t end up leaving until 5:30. It was quite an experience for all of us, and one of our boys ended up in the hospital with heat exhaustion. He is ok now, and will be coming back to work with us tomorrow! Today our group actually had a plan, we got through what we wanted to, and we got to come to the church a little early today, it was nice!

The worship services have been amazing! I believe they have touched everyone on this mission trip. There have been many eye opening experiences for everyone in our church, including me. God has touched my heart in numerous ways and it has been an awesome feeling. I think our group on this trip has become a lot closer through everything that has happened this week. We trust each other in a way to tell each other things we wouldn’t normally tell just anyone.

It’s only Tuesday and God has been amazing!! I pray everyone stays safe and we get the job God called us out here to do DONE!

Trey Saves The Day!

So today for me was very exciting, and yet kinda scary. My crew, the Hard Hats, are building a garage for a lady who has had multiple cars stolen out of her driveway. Most people agree that it is the hardest and most difficult project that any group has been assigned this week. It was very frustrating in the beginning, I have decided it was Satan trying to stop us from building it, but after a prayer this morning rebuking Satan's efforts to stop us, our work seemed to take off! We were able to nail down all of the baseboards onto the existing non-level foundation and was able to put up two of the three walls we are making. I have been blessed to have 3 students from Crossroads on my crew, Trey Green, Michael Richards, and Melody Johnson, and I will attest to them working very very hard!
But here's where the scary comes in....I was on an extension ladder leaning up against a wall that we had braced to the ground through spikes and a two by four, nailing in the top plates on the second wall. All of a sudden I feel a shifting forward, and that kinda freaked me out! I realized that the stake and beam that were supporting the wall I was leaning on had come out of the ground and therefore my weight sent the whole frame downward.
After making sure my pants were dry, I realized that Trey had caught the ladder from falling and I quickly descended back to solid ground. So props to Trey for saving me!

Our First Day of Work

Well howdy Crossroads!

So the day started off very early and cold. 5:30am and 51degrees to be exact. After lying in bed shivering to death, we finally got up and about and down to breakfast. It was eggs, bacon, and sausage, but I didn’t have too much because it wasn’t my momma’s cooking!

After breakfast we all got ready with our awesome hats, my friend Annabeth and I made, and World Changer bandanas and aprons. We made sure to wear clothing that we wouldn’t mind getting messy. We headed outside for the “Great Sendoff”, where we did the Hokey Pokey, said a few prayers and then went on to our work destinations.

The crew I am on is called the “Nail Heads” and we started working on our project house belonging to a sweet lady named Mrs. Williams. We started with scraping off the old paint on the outside of her home. It was physically tiring, but I must say we entertained ourselves by playing games to pass the time. My friend Jordan and I had a contest to see who could scrape off the longest paint piece…I don’t wanna brag but I did win with a whopping 35”!

After working the morning hours, our host church dropped by to bring us lunch. While eating my peaches and Pringles with a bottle of water, we all gathered around to have an afternoon devotional, after which we resumed working.

Finishing around 4:00, we headed back to the church. I ran to the showers to try and clean off the caked on dirt and paint of my skin and hair. The shower definitely felt good…real good! Then we had about 2 hours to relax. My friends and I passed the time coloring in some coloring books. Then at 6:00, it was time for dinner. My favorite…Spaghetti! It was delicious.

When dinner was over we all went up to the worship center to have the evening service. This one really made an impact on me and the rest of the students at Crossroads. It was a unique and explored the Lord’s Prayer, breaking it up and explaining it in depth. It was different because you couldn’t see the speakers, but you could hear them. This helped me focus on our Father better, and not who was standing up there. God really showed me tonight that he was in control and that I should just sit back and let him take the reigns of my life. After realizing what He was telling me, I was just broken. Tears just began to fall from my eyes. I had been worrying so much lately about situations in my life; boys, family, and things that I just don’t need to be worried about. He basically told me to “Chill out! I got this!”

After service, we had our family group meeting. We prayed and took up an offering for different missions around the country. One supports Urban ministries, one supports providing student missionaries to college campuses in Canada, and one that supports a conference called Kaleo Conference, a conference where students who feel the call to vocational ministry are trained and explore where they are called to.

All in all it was a really spiritually fulfilling day that was full of great times.

Hello Crossroads!!!

Sunday, July 20^th was a phenomenal day! Many, many exciting things happened today from 7:30 in the morning until 11 at night.

We woke up super early in the morning to eat an awesome breakfast at 7:30. Despite freezing cold rooms, we slept pretty well. After that, we left and took a group photo in our sweet t-shirts World Changers was oh so kind to give us.

At 9:30 our crew work groups split up among the churches in Jackson to attend Sunday School and “Big Church” as we like to call it. We got to interact with many students who attend these churches, meet some new people, and hear God’s Word. “Big Church” was an awesome experience, as the group I was with stayed at First Baptist Jackson, the church that everyone is staying at this week. The sanctuary was beautiful, filled with God’s love, something I will never forget. After the service, our work crews visited their sites, and met the people in which they would be working for throughout the week. It was a good introduction to what was to come in the week ahead.

After lunch we went to some scheduled training that explained why we’re here as World Changers, and some steps one should take if the opportunity to witness to someone was ever presented to us. Then we had our “Crew Position” training, in which selected students were taught how to fulfill the roles of an evangelist recorder, devotion leader, break master, and medic. I am an evangelist recorder, and my job is to write down any times that we witnessed or spoke the Gospel to anyone. Each and every job is very important.

After our delicious dinner, we attended the night worship service in which we poured out our hearts to God and gave Him our entire being. We had learned that to experience God’s power and to be able to share God’s light with others, we had to lay all of our burdens, troubles, and struggles at the foot of the cross. It was awesome to see the response we got from our own youth group as many confessed some failures in their lives, giving them to God and asking for forgiveness. All of us were transparent in the problems we were facing in our lives.

Free time was a time to relax, chill, and even do some quiet times. Then we finally hit the hay at 11. God is doing extraordinary things in students’ lives right now, and we hope that He will continue to work through us and give us the strength we need to share His Word.

Safe and Sound

So it's Saturday night, and after a long 8 hour drive we finally made it to Jackson! We unloaded all of our stuff, and found out we didn't have all of it. Two lucky girls' bags were left at CRBC, but God has provided a way for their bags to get here tomorrow afternoon. We are all excited and are getting prepared for a great week of service. Tomorrow we will divide into our work crews for the week and go to church with our crews at various sponsor churches within the vicinity of FBC Jackson. These support churches are not only hosting us for their Sunday service, but will be providing lunch for the crews everyday.
I want to take a second to tell you guys about a chance to get in touch with us throughout the week. World Changers has a system called encourage grams, where we can write letters of encouragement and place them in people's encourage boxes. Everyone taking part this week has a box, and every day we will check them for new letters (kinda like Christmas!) World Changers has set up an electronic encourage gram and every morning the office will print out encourage grams written by people from home and place them in the student's encourage boxes. You can access this feature by going to the World Changers website at www.world-changers.net and on the left hand side just click the "Send and E-Couragegram" and we will get it!
I want to thank you guys for being a praying church and keeping us in your prayers this week as we are doing God's work here in Jackson. It's so great to be a part of a church who believes in missions, and fully supports those who go.

We'll be updating daily about what's going on here in Jackson, let you read some student testimonies, and hopefully we'll be able to show you some pictures of the work that is taking place.

Many Parts, One Body

Well, I don't know what exactly to say so my experience will just have to do. I was at Solo Cristo Salva with some other men and our job was to lay some electrical lines, bust up concrete, and put in a drop-in ceiling. At first I thought what we were doing wouldn't be valued as much as what the other people were doing in the sites.

Then, different people kept showing up and helping us work all day (church members) and I started realizing they really needed this. Thursday night, everyone went to the site for worship along with the regular members. When the members saw the finished product they were extremely grateful and we sang songs with people hanging off scaffolding and stuff.

It was a great experience and I would not have changed a thing about my time here if I could have.

This week has really been too short. I've seen so much that God has done.

Even though this has been my first year going to Mexico, I've made so many relationships with the kids and feel like I've known them for a long time. It was really amazing though, because none of the kids speak like any English and I speak very little Spanish but we were able to communicate really well. Sarah Hageman was a real inspiration to me on this trip not only because of her love for God but every day before we got off the bus and people were leaving she made everyone get back on so we could pray for the kids.

This week, in a word, was epic. I cannot wait to come back and see what God has in store for us all.

We are so excited to return to Palmares, Costa Rica to serve the Lord through VBS. Bob has been involved with the mission since VBS started in 2004. I joined him in 2006 and this year 2008.

Bob's duties include Van Driver, Photography, and Recreation. My duties are Registration, Crafts, and Snacks.

I am used to being the designated "photographer," and holding that position solely does not bother me. Still, it is always fun to meet someone with the same job designation, or at the very least, the same passion. South of the border this year, I met a man named Eduardo that was from out of town but aiding the church Solo Cristo Salva.

Before I go on, let me say that I believe very strongly that having a videographer/photographer for a church is important. The ancient Israelites would erect a monument whenever God would do something outstanding in their midst. This was so the event would be remembered, not just for the rest of their lives, but for their children's lives, and so on. Videography and photography takes on the same role in today's world-- a visual monument, a reminder, to what God has done. Back to the story.

Eduardo is a local photographer here in Mexico, of course. Reminding his people of what God has done in years past. But he is short on equipment. He owns a camera and a flash, but a flash by itself will often create harsh, unlikeable shadows. In the picture, it often will distract from the actual scene by drawing attention to the ridiculous hard shadows. Eduardo had made a kind of flash diffuser using tupperware, which I think is just about the coolest thing ever, but its practicality was limited. A good way to soften up light in a photo is with a flash umbrella. These are available in Mexico, but at exorbitant prices-- more than a hundred American dollars, where in the USA, you could get one for 20 or less. So I gave him mine. There are different parts to the body of Christ, and we all have to work together. But those of us that perform the same function have to work together especially well. Living in the United States, I'm at an advantage when it comes to photographic equipment, so it should be natural for me to help out a brother. I am glad he will now be able to do his job more effectively and remind the church of what God has done even this week, for we are all far too easily swayed and our memories fade much too fast.

How To Do VBS?

Blogger missionary. Not words I would have used to describe myself. Not until I served four days in Flores, helping with VBS, that is. Several weeks ago I co-led a VBS class at CRBC. We used every inch of CRBC and the Colin Powell gym to create an exciting week of learning God's word on Outrigger Island. After that week I felt pretty confident about being able to assist with VBS in Mexico. Then I entered the world of San Luis Potosi.

Imagine my anxiety when I first boarded the rickety bus bound for Flores armed with nothing but a soccer ball, a trunk full of crafts, and a flip chart of songs in Spanish. As we entered the Flores neighborhood I was shocked by the dirt roads, tiny dilapitated houses and trash heaps. My anxiety grew as we pulled up in front of our VBS site... a concrete, one-story building about 30 feet x 80 feet with broken windows and about six light bulbs hanging from the ceiling. "How in the world can we do VBS here?" was my first thought. Fast forward four days to my last morning with the kids we had been ministering to all week.

Tears welled in my eyes as I told them I was leaving and would not be back tomorrow. God showed up in a big way in Flores this week. He took the time and energy our team was willing to give, our trunk full of crafts, our songs and some soccer balls and showed these kids they are worthy to be loved not just by us, but more importantly, by Him. I witnessed genuine joy in the eyes of the children as we played with them, sat on the dirty concrete floor to help them with crafts, and as they heard the Word of God from our translator, Gaby. In that first day I realized you don't need fancy decorations, a big building, a playground, or videos to have a successful VBS. All you need are kids, a few people with a heart for showing God's love, any place to gather and God's hand upon you.

Some bubble gum, a soccer ball, and some bubbles don't hurt either! As I left the site today my thought was "how can we not do VBS here? I can't wait 'til next year!

Mission Loreta

I never want to lose this feeling, this happiness that comes from doing God's work. In the afternoons I go to the site of Mission Loreta.

It's amazing how one little smile you give can brighten a child's face. A face that melts your heart, a face that reminds you why you came to San Luis Potosi. It is a great thing to experience. Later, after the songs have been sung, I spend the rest of the time playing futbol (soccer) with the older kids.

They were very accepting and it was an experience I will never forget! Even though they have so little, they have so much joy. I was happy to bring even more smiles to their faces, and I am so thankful for my new friendships.

Why do we come back to Mexico year after year? Why do we endure the trials of the travel, challenging food, and a week with little rest? Why do we feel so good after we return home? It is all in their faces. The faces of the children of Mexico.

Their eyes are so full of love & appreciation for everything we do for them. Their hearts shine through their beautiful smiles. They are genuinely grateful for even the smallest things we do, like putting a sticker on their hand or helping them glue a plastic eyeball to a foam fish. Even the older teenagers and adults appreciate us and our efforts.

Sometimes missions in Mexico make our fast paced lives back home seem a bit silly. Back in The Woodlands, we rarely see kids in great need and even fewer that appreciate our help. It simply seems easier to give yourself away here in Mexico. Their appreciation can always be seen in their sparkling eyes and their happy smiles.

We were blessed with a great first day turnout. Our door to door work on Monday and word of mouth brought in 62 children for VBS and 13 ladies for ladies bible study. We also had 4 youth helpers, 2 IBC helpers, 6 CRBC helpers and Pastor Carlos.
Day one went very well.
We are closing our nightly work schedule after preparing for tomorrow.

Running On Empty

Although it is only the second day of our VBS week, I have learned a lot about myself and missions. After the 36 hour bus ride and our first day of mission work, I felt as though I was running on empty and about to crash. I began to wonder (along with everyone else) how I would survive the rest of the week when the first day wasn't even complete.

However, that night we met together as a church for praise and worship. Once we gathered, everybody started singing and laughing. Jose started cracking jokes and before I knew it I was feeling pretty refreshed. It was then that I realized it's ok to reach empty because God finds an opportunity to fill me up. So I have made it my mission to completely pour myself out to the children of San Luis Potosi, knowing the Lord will restore me by night.

Hello everyone back home.

Today has been an amazing day. It is the second day of Vacation Bible School and already I have been blessed so many times. I, along with my team, are at a local church here called Ebenezer. The church originally was only one room but over the past years the construction team has been able to add another room behind it. And I just want to say that the construction team is awesome. Those guys never quit. They're at it from 8:00 am 'till 6:00 pm or later, and I never hear them complain. Today, they were building a roof in the rain. It has truly been amazing what they have been able to do.

Today, at VBS, the children learned about Jesus and how He is the son of God. Thankfully, we have ladies from the church that teach the lessons for us because my spanish is terrible. Then the kids normally go to crafts. And I tell you that if it weren't for my other team members, the craft would be impossible. It is truly amazing to see how God has given each person a purpose on this trip and many times more than one.

It took me all of five minutes to fall in love with the kids. They're all just full of life and seem so grateful. Which is always refreshing and takes me aback because I realize growing up in the States, I can be very ungrateful. And today was even more amazing because the mime team came to our site. The skits they do are, simply put, amazing. Probably the best way to break the language barrier without learning the language. They have been bringing people to Jesus left and right. I know at Ebenezer, a site of about 20 kids, six to eight children came to know the Lord. It has been awesome to see God work through the mime team. It seems that everywhere I look, God is working. I'm excited for the rest of the week and to see what God has in store for us.

93-Year-Old Answered Prayers

During VBS, Jeff Green and his interpreter Jose Lopez went door to door to the apartments surrounding the plaza. At one of the apartments, a son named Oscar Del Castillio Rivera lived with his sick mother, Flavia Rivera Vega. Flavia is 93 years old and has osteo arthritis and she is blind. She has much pain in her back and knees. Oscar invited them into their home so they could pray for physical healing for Senora Vega. Jeff then asked if they went to church, and they said that they were Catholic but did not regularly attend church. Jose Lopez interpreted for Jeff and asked Flavia that if she died today, would she go to heaven. She said she didn't know. Oscar said the same. After explaining the plan of salvation, they both prayed to receive Christ into their lives.

So we're all tired, exhausted, and pumped for the rest of the week. Sure, we did have a slight delay in travel, but it has done nothing but prepare our hearts for the week to come. I'm excited to see what God has in store for the upcoming days-- He has already done so much!

Today, I went to my morning site, Viveros. This place is basically a dump yard with space covered in dust, glass, and a lot of dirt. We started singing first, and almost half the kids already knew the songs. It warms my heart that they remembered and got me thinking about how many more new kids would remember these songs next year. Even with songs, God is working to change their lives.

I pray for the people of San Luis, and that we may share Jesus with little things, such as a smile or a hug. God is doing mighty things right now, and I know it will continue throughout the rest of the week.

Day 1- The Common Thread

What a first day in San Luis Potosi! We fell asleep last night around midnight to music from the streets below. We set our alarms-- completely unnecessary! We awoke to the booms of cannons-- can you imagine? Later, I discovered that these are periodically fired to scare away birds from the plazas. I jump every time I hear it-- even now, one has just gone off!

I attended worship services first at Primera Baptista along with the mime team and about a dozen others. The mime team presented the plan of salvation; Bruce Callendar and Rocky led several songs. Approximately a dozen church members attended. The most significant memory at this service was Pastor's comments regarding how sad the church was at this time-- a teenager known by the congregation was killed violently by gang activity. Another significant memory was the joy and excitement that members of our group had as they showed the work done last year.

We traveled by bus to Mission Solo Cristo, where we were greeted by the pastor at the bus. This church had many people worshipping today. They were so kind, friendly, and welcoming. The worship was so genuine and very real. Our mime team presented the gospel with the Redeemer play. The most memorable moment of this service was when the pastor brought a man forward who wanted to speak to us. He had taken the time to try to write the English words he wanted to communicate. As he tried to speak in English, his words were compelling-- how he loved God, loved his country and this city, but was broken-hearted over what must be an acceleration of drug trafficking, gangs, and the violence associated. His words urged us to partner with them in caring for and praying for the people of San Luis Potosi. He broke down in tears. It was so emotional to me. Jose called us to circle the members of the church and pray for them, this beautiful city, for Mexico. I love this body of believers and this loving pastor... feel connected.

It seems that a common thread is weaving its way through the experiences of today's services-- there are broken hearts, a sense of urgency to pray and to present Christ, and to seek Him regarding the problems mentioned earlier. Church services ended at 2:00! It didn't seem that it could possibly be this late and no one was in a rush to leave.

We left for our block party at Mission Loreta at 3:00. This was so much fun! The kids were so enthusiastic and there were kind, supportive moms standing nearby. I especially have become attached to Brenda and Brenda-- two 5th grade girls, and Lupe, a little sister of one of the Brendas. We swung and played frisbee, and they were patient with my limited spanish, even laughing at my name! I really look forward to seeing them tomorrow when our mime team is at their location. Tonight, I must learn how to ask them if they know Christ in Spanish. I need to be able to say more!

At 8:00, we left for the plaza. We were on the steps of either a museum or a library-- beautiful plaza, beautiful architecture, and people mingling. We sang a few songs and a crowd gathered. It began to rain, but stopped very quickly. The mime team presented, and the crowd was so attentive! Gilbert Lozano spoke and prayed and at least ten people came forward to speak to him, Cindy, or Jose, saying they had prayed the prayer. Many of these were young men-- it reminds me of that common thread! My immediate impression was that God was already answering the prayers of our services today. There was one young man who watched for a long time in the crowd, wandered up the steps standing behind us against a column, and watched more. It seems that God was working because eventually he wandered down to Gilbert. What an incredible evening it has been!

I also enjoyed a little boy who sat beside me on the steps during the mimes and Gilbert's talk, with blue cotton candy as big as I've ever seen. He'd lean into me and we exchanged smiles. I found his parents standing behind us, amused that he'd found this spot in the middle of our group upon the steps.

I can't imagine what God will unfold tomorrow.

The Longest Day

We charged out of the CRBC parking lot full of passion and covered by the full armor of God. Within two hours, we faced our first challenge.

The alternator light on the Orange Bus was so red. During the hour of downtime, we watched God provide a rest stop, a breeze, some cloud cover, and jumper cables.

The jumper cables came with a truck driver who needed to hear God's truth. Bus repairs and witnessing-- what an odd pair. Once again, we were off to conquer the world. As we pulled into San Antonio, the horrible alternator light showed itself again. We managed to limp into a Luby's parking lot. Dinner first-- bus worries later. Well, the Orange bus would not start. After much pain, the Green bus left the Orange bus behind with the promise to return with another bus. While we were waiting for the bus that was not to come, we managed to praise God for two hours, witness to our bus driver and have wheelchair races in the parking lot.

A long eight hours later, we were on the road to Laredo. We arrived to find another bus waiting for us. However, we soon discovered the bus was smaller. Fortunate for us, God knows how to pack buses. It all fit. We were off again. We remained undeterred through borders, rain storms and accidents. Arriving roughly 32 hours after we started, we stopped to praise God for his perseverance and armor.
